As I was trying to compile songs from my childhood to play throughout my upcoming road trip, a lot of really old memories surprisingly came back to mind, memories that I never would have remembered or thought of had I not listened to these songs.
Some of these really heart warming memories are of people I met growing up. And I realized that I indeed made quite a few really special friendships along the way, some were kept, some faded away with time.
The first person that stood out was CM. I would say that he was my very first best friend. He was a classmate in 3rd grade. Together with another classmate and good friend ADV, we would always walk together on the way home. I remember being envious of his things; clothes, school supplies and most especially his shoes (one of those slip on shoes made of denim), because we could not afford the same things those times. He was well-to-do, he would always come to school in neatly pressed uniform. Regardless, he was very nice, soft-spoken (usually silent) and he did not mind my and ADV’s living in the slums. My most vivid memory of him was when he fell in a creek on our way home. Imagine the horror of soiling his immaculate uniform. I remember hoping he’d just give me his mud-covered shoes. Instead of crying, he just laughed with ADV and me like hell. I guess that’s when you can say that you really are good friends with somebody, when he doesn’t mind you laughing at his misery and vice versa. I guess for a child like we were, everything was play. Life is play. Sadly, came 4th grade and I was transferred to the 1st section and he and ADV stayed in the 3rd section, the friendship faded away.
The second person that I fondly remembered was RD. Like CM, he came from a rich family. He became a classmate when I was transferred to the 1st section in 4th grade but we became good friends when we got to 5th grade because we were seatmates. He would always ask me to their house to play transformer toys. He even gave me his Optimus Prime, I was happy as a clown. By that age, kids started to have crushes in school and he had one on J. I guess in return for Optimus Red, I became his emissary. I would send, sometimes even write for him, his love letters for J. Sadly, came 6th grade and I was transferred to a different school, the friendship also faded away.
The third person and I guess the one I really still remember well is LDA. She became a classmate in 1st year high school but I already knew her from another section in 6th grade when we both transferred to a new school. We instantly became very close that we practically did everything together from day one. She was always one of my closest rivals for top honors in class but it never, as far as I can remember, came between us. It never crossed our minds, it was a non-issue. I could honestly say that she was at the time the only person I would not mind beating me to the top honors. Not many people liked her for reasons I still couldn’t figure out because I knew her as a very bubbly, but also very outspoken person. She was very good in English and I remember her teaching me a few lines so I could defend myself from bullies… in English. She said it would shut them up. She was one of the very few people who could really make me laugh with their humor. Believe me, I have a very sick sense of humor so it takes a lot for me to be genuinely amused. And she did amuse me. I totally get her. She was my original Evil Twin Sister. Sadly, high school came to an end and the friendship, again, faded away. I sorely miss her to this day.
I guess that is life. People come and go. At the end of the day, we are all… alone.
